The state of the Web in Kenya

This post is about the state of website development in Kenya. The industry has enjoyed lots of growth in the last fifteen years since the KPTC first connected to the internet.

Back then, domain registration would cost KShs 5,000 and websites were all in html. Now, if you were born post 1990 or live outside Kenya, KPTC stands for Kenya Posts and Telecommunications Company. Its was a government company that had effective complete control over all telecommunications technology and business back in the day.

I should also mention the dropdowns that most websites had - which were supported by some of the ugliest JavaScript that has ever existed. The situation has grown widely and deeply. Web sites have increased in number and also in their relative technology.

I remember when anyone could

I remember when anyone could download a half-baked script on dynamicdrive.com and call it code. That code was impossible to maintain . . . and to imagine that there are still people that use it!
